The Girl Scouts have become synonymous with sweet treats in America’s collective consciousness. But these days, they’re doing more than filling our cabinets with Thin Mints. They’re tackling important issues that impact girls across the country.
- Troop 14567 in Atlanta recently collaborated with the CDC to create programming for a new “Public Health” badge, which includes training on bullying, emergency response, diet and exercise, mental health, respiratory health, and sexual health.
- The Girl Scouts of Greater New York have gained national attention with Troop 6000, which is made up entirely of unhoused girls living in NYC shelters. The troop emphasizes community-building and confidence to encourage these young women to see themselves as leaders.
- On a national scale, some of the newest badges girls can qualify for include "Financial Literacy," "STEM Careers," and "Mental Wellness."
So next time you fill out that cookie order form, remember that your investment is going further than your dining room table.
